Stop Smoking Now and Forever

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

In order to help make sure that you are successful in your next, and final, attempt to quit smoking here are a couple of things which you should actually keep in mind. Setting yourself up to achieve success is not something that can happen by chance.

If you need to stop smoking for good, you will need to make some conscious choices that has to be followed. If you wake up each morning with the objective of attempting to avoid cigarettes and no real plan on the simple way to basically avoid cigarettes, you’ll realize that you are smoking again very fast.

While you can be sure that quitting smoking is the wise choice for your health it is a habit which has come to be a massive comfort to you. Giving up is so frightening that you even begin to work yourself up over it, making yourself convinced that you cannot actually stop smoking and that you shouldn’t even attempt it.

If you believe that you can succeed, you’ll find it way easier to quit smoking for good.

Your first step should be selecting a specific date that you want to stop smoking. This is any date that you please, but in contrast to that fad diet you keep meaning to try out, this date should really come.

When the date arrives, you must make sure that all your buddies and family are behind you for support. As a giant step in the right path, you could even avoid buying new cigarettes if you’re out, or destroy any that you presently have in your possession.

As a hint, if the cigarettes are in the cupboard in the kitchen or the lounge but not physically on you, then yes they do still count as being in your possession. You must remove everything related to smoking from your home. This includes matches, lighters, ashtrays, and all cigarettes.

Be sure to clean everything in your house if you can, particularly bed sheets and drapes. Anything that smells similar to smoke needs to be cleaned. This will clear your home and make it smell fresh and clean.

Make a reward system for yourself. A neat place to start would be a tiny reward after your first 24 hours with no cigarettes. Then move onto two days, then 3 days, then a week, 2 weeks, a month, two months and so on. These small rewards will help you to stay motivated to quit smoking as the going gets hard and your willpower starts to diminish.

If you give into the enticement, you lose out on your reward. This should be unpleasant to be handy. Every time you meet a goal, you go to a game, which can encourage you to stay on track so you may use those fantastic tickets.

Writing down your goals is another great way to successfully quit smoking. There’s something about writing down goals that just makes them more crucial. If you’re just walking around with your goals and rewards in your head it is simple to switch the rules as you go along.

If they are written down, it is a lot simpler for somebody in your own family to help hold you responsible. In addition, this can make it appear much more reasonable to really quit smoking. Talking about quitting smoking can sound really scary, but seeing it written down can be a reminder just how easy the process really is.

Here Is Why I Changed My Mind About Swine Flu

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I suspect that for most people their concern about swine flu peaked the day that the World Health Organization raised their warning level all the way up to level 6 and declared that they were at “full pandemic status”. Since then the world has not melted or anything, so we have all gone back to business as usual. I know that I have, and I think most people have taken the view that this thing is pretty much yesterday’s story and that swine flu is about as harmful as a drink of water.

And you know what? So far, it looks as if that’s about right (yes, some people have died of swine flu complications, but a lot less than were initially expected). I have to admit that I was starting to feel the same way, but I have just finished reading a book called “Survive Pandemic Flu – Understand and Protect Against Novel Strains Of Influenza”, and what I found out is that looks can be deceiving when it comes to strains of flu. The author points out that the last time we saw a flu strain like this novel H1N1 strain begin spreading around the world, it ended with the deaths of about 100 million people.

It did not happen that long ago either. It was 1918, less than a century ago. An H1N1 strain came out of nowhere at about the same time of the year, spring time, and then vanished a month or two later without causing much of a problem. But then it came back in the fall.

This time it was completely changed, and that dopey virus that caused little loss of sleep in the early part of the year was suddenly dropping people in their tracks. Those that turned blue did not last very long, and in most cities around the world they quickly ran out of coffins and had to stack corpses in makeshift piles and bury them in mass graves.

Well, I could go on about the obvious parallels between the strain that emerged in 1918 and the one we are dealing with in 2009. But really, I would only be scratching the surface of a very involved story that actually goes back to Abraham Lincoln and something he did during the Civil War. Something which guaranteed that even if nature acting on its own does not come up with a twin version of that 1918 strain, we may yet get to experience it again anyway.

That was just one of the surprising things I discovered in Survive Pandemic Flu, and I can guarantee you that those “idiot” WHO officials that we all laughed at earlier when they raised the alarm and then nothing bad seemed to happen, well, they aren’t quite the idiots we made them out to be. Not by a long shot.

Trust me, if you think all those swine flu warnings were hype and that our troubles are now behind us, then you are going to be one of the 99 percent of the population that gets caught with its pants down when the nasty hits the fan. No one knows whether it will be this year, the next, or five years from now. But if you would rather be among the one percent whose family isn’t taken by surprise, get ahold of this book. Heck, for the cost of cheap family meal you get an education that might just save the life of a family member one day.

So drop what you are doing, and check out my link

right now so that you can get prepared well ahead of time. I know that my family is going to be a lot better off for me having learned what is in this book, and what I can do to make sure they are protected as much as possible against any pandemic threat – no matter when it makes its appearance.

Usually when someone tells you that some book they are recommending may be the most important one you will read this year, you already KNOW that it is a line. But in this case, that’s just not true. At any rate, you can decide for yourself when you go check it out. You can thank me later for pointing you in the right direction.

At the very least, sign up to grab the introductory chapters of the book. If you read those and you still think you and your family have nothing to fear from the next pandemic you will at least know where to find the information later if you discover you were wrong.

Quitting Smoking with Chantix: What are patients saying?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Suffering from a smoking addiction?

Does the thought of quitting send you into a mental spin?

Had enough of the tobacco smoke on your clothes and breath?

Done with the cravings for cigarettes that seem to rule your day?

Have you had enough of cigarette ash burns on your clothes and furniture?

Finished with cleaning cigarette butts in ashtrays?

One of the newest smoking cessation aids on the market is Varenicline, also called Chantix or Champix. Scientists discovered that a natural chemical in the body called cystisine blocks the pleasurable effects of nicotine and duplicated it, creating Chantix and consequently, helping ease withdrawal symptoms. Chantix actually targets the brain’s nicotine’s receptors, combining with them and causes a release of dopamine equivalent to what is released during smoking.

Champix Side Effects Common, say those who write the testimonials

Like most prescription medications, Varenicline (Chantix, Champix) is not without its side effects. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, gas, heartburn, bad taste in the mouth, drowsiness, headache, and rash are commonly reported side effects from Chamtix. The bad taste in the mouth with other digestive system-related symptoms also seem to decrease appetite in some, and increase appetite in others on the smoking cessation drug. It’s not unusual for patients quitting smoking to also report trouble falling asleep or staying asleep or unusual dreams or nightmares with Varenicline.

According to www.ConsumerReports.org, there’s good evidence that varenicline helps people with quitting their smoking addiction. And according to patients posting their testimonials, the drug is working since they report quite interesting things such as:

-  “…easier to fight the ritual of I HAVE TO SMOKE when I wake up, on breaks, and when I drive”

- “With Chantix, I couldn’t believe I wasn’t screaming at everyone when quitting.”

- “Varenicline makes the cravings more bearable and not as frequent”

- “…feeling sick right after I take the pill but I can handle it.”

- “…using Chantix with very good results.”

- “Someone smoked within 3 feet of me and I didn’t want a cigarette.”

- “I smoked for more than 50 years before, and because of Champix now I don’t.”

- “After 2 weeks on Varenicline, I can walk away from cigs totally.”

- “Champix made smoking cigarettes taste awful!”

A greater majority of the patients writing testimonials about Chantix did mention the nausea, so you can pretty much expect it although Pfizer states nausea only occurs 30% of the time. Several people who quit smoking with varenicline were convinced it wasn’t working at the start, but then had a major realization that varenicline had helped them kick the smoking addiction when a certain situation arose that they never overcame before. The drug has been a great aid for those who have been hooked on nicotine for any amount of time; years of nicotine use doesn’t seem to matter.

According to Consumer Reports experts, in a study of three different quitting smoking methods (bupropion which is wellbutrin, varenicline, and placebo) with more than 1000 people, 14% quit smoking on Wellbutrin while 23% were successful with varenicline. Only 10% succeeded with the placebo. Most had been smoking for over 20 years. Pfizer reported on that same quit smoking study.

Experts warn not about combining Wellbutrin with varenicline for more effectiveness; the combination can be dangerous. They also warn that Chantix not be discontinued suddenly and not given to friends – get your own prescription for it. Recommended trial of Chantix is 12 weeks according to the manufacturer.

There is a word of warning, though; not every drug is miraculous for all. Some patients reported changes in behavior such as agitation, suicide thoughts or depression from using Chantix. The drug should be discontinued immediately if any of these symptoms appear.

Pfizer makes Champix and recommends that a person who wants to stop smoking should first create a plan of attack (selecting a date, deciding what method to use, getting rid of ashtrays, lighters, and cigarettes) before they actually start. These behavioral modifications can be extremely helpful during the quitting smoking process. These are commonly held beliefs by those helping smokers quit. Pfizer also recommends that someone use their quit smoking drug varenicline one week before you actually stop smoking cigarettes completely.

So when it comes to quitting smoking, it looks like Chantix may be the easy ticket out of a world of nicotine.

What do you think? …. What have you found to help you quit smoking?

Let us know and help others make their decision because no one, not even a smoker really wants to smoke!

Johnson & Johnson Case Study – May 09

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

NICORETTE brand manager at Johnson & Johnson, Rob Elliott has learned the value of having his leaflets in doctors surgeries throughout the UK.

Positive feedback from IDS proves patients are picking up the Need Help to Stop Smoking leaflets in their droves – and as a result discussing life-changing advice on giving-up cigarettes with a health care professional.

“It’s good to know that we are getting a good response from patients who pick up our leaflets.

“We do a great deal of market research with healthcare professionals, patients and consumers– but the information we get from IDS concerns people who have actually picked up one of our leaflets and have completed a questionnaire,” he said.

Every company using the Waiting room Information Service receives a detailed marketing report from IDS pinpointing information about their leaflets.

The report on the Need to Stop Smoking leaflet showed:

In total 582 people who had selected the Need to Stop Smoking leaflet responded to the IDS questionaire – that represents 15% of all people returning a questionnaire in the past 12 months.

Feedback from the questionnaire was both quantitative and qualitative with comments that endorsed the campaign.

“The leaflet caught my eye when I was at the doctor’s so you know there is help available. I picked it up and gave it to my husband and he went to the doctor and asked for help. He has given up now and is doing well,” said one respondent.

And another commented: “Without seeing the leaflet we would never have considered asking the doctor about giving up smoking – it is a very, very good service to have this information available to patients so that you can look at it and then ask the doctor when you go in.”

Responses to the questionnaire showed that often people will be visiting their doctor for another ailment – and while waiting to see their GP, they will pick up a leaflet and discuss it with their doctor.

“We were staying with friends and he [my husband] was taken bad not being able to breathe so we went to her doctor’s and while we were waiting we saw the leaflet about help to give up smoking.

“So when we went in to see the doctor about the breathing problem, we asked him about getting nicorette patches,” explained another respondent.

Ultimately the research proved WIS:

Rob Elliot added: “I would recommend the service – I’ve had first hand experience on field visits that our leaflets are pretty well used.

“Once you get the design right, you will get people picking up the leaflet. It means that people who are thinking about giving up smoking but may have an appointment to speak about a different matter, will bring this up as a result of seeing the leaflets.

“And they will take the leaflets for family members and friends – meaning the information is getting out to a wider community.”

Business Development Manager Sarah O’Reilly said she was delighted with Rob’s comments and it showed the power of the Waiting room Information Service.

“Rob is clearly delighted with the response he has had to his leaflets – it is a great example of how we work with major companies such as Johnson & Johnson to help them achieve their aim,” she said.

Richard Street is the Online Development Manager for www.leaflets2u.co.uk. Leaflets2u is an integral part of IDS UK’s service providing essential access to Patient Information leaflets for Health Care Professionals in the UK.
