I am an average guy that is thirty one years old.  I started smoking when I was only thirteen years old.  I am proud to say that I am a happy non-smoker now.  If you are tired of trying to quit with all of these quit smoking aids then read on.

I recently was growing tired of all of the different methods on how to quit smoking .  It was driving me crazy and I had to find a way to quit smoking fast.  My life depended on it.  I did not want to die a slow and painful death or be tied to some oxygen tank when I grow old.  This is no life for me.

A buddy of mine introduced me to the e-cigarette one day when we were hanging out by the lake.  At first site I thought it was a fake cigarette but to my surprise it was real alright. I was curious as this might help me quit smoking for good.  I asked him if I could have one.  He was like, “no there is a website”.  The website that he told me about is at the bottom of the page.  The company is currently offering free samples of the product as you can see if this is something for you.  If it worked for me it will more likely work for you in your attemt to quit smoking for good.

A recent study conducted of all the people that had tried e-cigarettes said it really did help them quit for good.  if you have tried everything out there then I highly recommend this product as this is the future of quitting smoking.  That is why I am writing this article as there doesn’t seem to be enough quality information on the electronic cigarette quitting method.

Giving Up Smoking – And Cadmium in Cigarettes!

There have been numerous discussions on the poisonous chemicals that are included in the manufacture of common cigarettes but still warnings about the danger these chemicals are constantly ignored by users.

Cigarettes are not only characterized by chemicals with poisonous properties but also chemicals with properties considered as extremely toxic and radioactive such as cadmium, arsenic, lead, and polonium.

Cadmium is a toxic and heavy metal that occurs in nature which is produced by smelting, the heating and melting of ores to extract metals. Study shows that cadmium is present in cigarettes at very high levels of concentration.

Cadmium is widely used in the manufacture of batteries, metal plating, plastics, and textile industry.

The regular cigarette contains 1-2mcg of cadmium and 40-60% of this amount of substance is inhaled and expected to pass through the lungs and into the body. Since other foods such as shellfish and animal liver and kidneys also contain cadmium, smokers take in additional 1-3mcg of cadmium over what is taken in from other sources in their daily life. Consequently, smokers are found to have twice as much cadmium intake.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that cadmium level from food source and other sources must not exceed 5 ppb(parts-per-billion). EPA believes that this level of cadmium exposure would not produce any health problems.

The continued intake of excess cadmium may cause health risks such as vomiting, convulsions, shock, diarrhea, salivation, sensory disturbances, liver dysfunction, and renal failure.

Acute exposure to cadmium by inhalation can cause lung problems such as pneumonitis and pulmonary edema.

Pneumonitis is a form of inflammation that occurs in the lungs due to difficulty in breathing resulting from too much inhalation of cadmium substance which is common in mineral oil, gasoline, or inhaling chemical fumes.

On the other hand, pulmonary edema is an abnormal build up of fluid in the air sacs of the lungs that cause shortness in breathing.

The bottom line is quitting smoking is the best medicine.

Radioactive Elements in Cigarettes And Their Effects

It’s no secret nowadays that smoking is bad for you, but did you know that are are radioactive elements in cigarettes? I didn’t until I decided that I was giving up smoking and paid more attention to the harm that I was doing to my body and my health.

Cigarette smoke contains constituents such as radioactive elements, Polomium-210 and Lead-210 which are highly poisonous, heavy metals that can cause lung cancer. Frightening isn’t it that we are deliberately introducing these dangerous elements to our bodies and paying for the privilige too?

Radioactive lead isotopes and polonium isotopes get into tobacco because of the radioactivity of soil-based radium. The regions where tobacco is grown are very rich in radium soils, this can also be contributed to by adding fertiliser to the soil. This elemental particle in soil that surrounds tobacco plants releases gas which enables the tiny polonium and lead particles to float free, consequently attaching to bits of dirt and then are carried to the outer covering of tobacco leaves. Since tobacco leaves are covered with many fine hair-like extensions, lead and polonium particles stick and stay in the leaves until it gets to the human body.

Usually, tobaccos are washed as part of cleaning during the manufacturing process of cigarettes. But as these elements are so tiny they and not soluble in water, they are quite easily able to escape from this water-based cleaning process.

The problem happens when a smoker breathes in a cigarette’s smoke. Radioactive elements are attached to the tar, another toxic chemical produced by cigarette smoke, which is collected at the junction of airways within the lungs called bronchioles. Studies have reported that polonium-210 and lead-210 build up at these areas in the lungs of smokers and that over time, they produce cancer-causing radioactive areas within the body.

Health risks associated with inhalation of polonium-210 and lead-210 are manifested in the development of lung cancer, which has symptoms of coughing that could worsen over time, constant chest pain, shortness of breath, continual problems with bronchitis, pneumonia, fatigue, swelling of the face and neck, loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, and the worst symptom – coughing up blood.

Lung cancer is one of the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the developed world and smoking tobacco is the main culprit. Early detection of lung cancer is very difficult because symptoms do not often occur until the disease is at an advanced stage. Even then, the 2-year survival rate is only 2 percent. Most people diagnosed in the advanced stage have only 6-months to a year to live.

It really was an eye opener to realise that I have voluntarily paid for and taken in these cancer giving radioactive elements for many years. Giving up smoking last year was the best decision that I have ever made – I just wish that I had made that decision sooner. For all that I know it may be too late, the harmful elements may already have built up too much for me to reverse the damage, but I am hopeful that I quit smoking in time to save my life.

The Path to Quitting Smoking

You have already decided to stop smoking and the problem you are now faced with is how to remain a non-smoker. Following are several steps that may help you to stay away from smoking for ever.

First you might feel restless at night when you should be sleeping or you often times feel you are out of control of your body movements or perhaps experiencing coughing. These are all symptoms of being in a withdrawal stage. What helps to make you feel more comfortable is telling yourself that you are on the verge of quitting the smoking habit and therefore getting clean and healthier.

Many develop colds, sore throats and coughs soon after stopping smoking. You begin to wonder why you stopped when your smokers cough is worse than before! I think of it as the badness coming up out of my lungs and feel that it is worth some discomfort to rid myself of the smoking habit.

The manifestation of withdrawal symptoms can be mild for some and hard for others as nicotine leaves your body. This is just how the body initiates cleansing.

The most common withdrawal symptoms that are experienced are feeling hungry more often, restless or cranky. Many smokers report getting headaches, feeling tired, being low on energy, and having trouble sleeping. For me it was a need for a substitute. Some days I wanted lots of coffee – a caffiene boost. Other days it wasn’t hunger in particular, more a craving for foods with a strong taste.

I found it helpful to keep some orange segments in the fridge. I never liked to smoke when I could smell or had just eaten freshly opened oranges as cigarettes didn’t taste the same. No harm in getting some extra vitamin C either.

Whenever these symptoms are felt, many actually will last for 3-5 minutes, this is the time you will experience cravings or the desire to smoke like in the old days. Or a need to overcome stress and emotions, you smoke to feel better, relaxed, and more comfortable. This is also the time that you should keep on telling yourself you are over and done with smoking. This should keep you focused on your goal to quit.

Now, there are very easy ways to overcome this situation like taking a few deep breaths for a few minutes until these cravings are gone. Breathing is an exercise that relaxes muscles consequently calms down the urge to smoke.

Another way to help overcome withdrawal symptoms is by drinking water. This gives you a fresh feeling and enables your body to flush toxins like nicotine. Keep on doing something. Watch your favorite television series, play computer games, sing a song, look at happy family pictures, or make a sketch of anything you want to draw. Just keep your hands and your mind busy.

Exercising regularly can help too. Apart from keeping your mind off cigarettes, exercise will give you a feelgood boost. You quickly feel healthier and regular exercise can help you to sleep better. I remember thinking that another nights sleep is another day away from being a smoker.

Trying to stay in a good mood is the key to being less tempted to smoke. So take care of yourself by being positive. This will make you more able to resist the desire to smoke. Talk to yourself about the advantages of being smoke-free and finally think about how much money you will save by quitting smoking.
