Keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking

 

It’s that time of year again, and your new year’s resolution is the same as it was last year. But this time will be different wont it? Or will it? In order to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking this year we will review some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to quit and we’ll give you a few tips to get prepared.

 

Mistake #1 – If you don’t end up quitting on January 1, you give up all together. 

You don’t have to quit on New Year’s Day to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking. In fact, January 1 is probably one of the worst days you can choose to quit. You want to choose a period of one week to a month that is the calmest and most normal your life can be. You want to eliminate all possible excuses to pick up a cigarette. New year’s day when you have family in town, you’re still eating holiday sized meals, and drinking more than usual will only provide you with a million reasons not to quit. And then when you fail, you won’t try again until next year.

 

Mistake #2 – Not having a plan to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking.

Everyone can say they’re going to quit, but the successful quitters are those who have a well thought out plan. Start by planning an appropriate quit date. Write down all of the things that trigger you to smoke, how you will avoid them and what you will do if they do come up.

 

Mistake #3 – Keeping your new year’s resolution a secret.

If you plan to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking a secret, than you probably don’t really want to quit.  You know that if you tell people that you will be held accountable by them. You don’t want to feel like a failure to anyone else anymore than you will to yourself. So if you’re serious and you want to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking, then tell everyone. Not only will you feel obligated to follow through, but you will be surprised by all of the support your friends and family lend you.

 

Mistake #4 – Not preparing.

You will find that one of the most difficult things you will ever do in your life time is to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking. You wouldn’t begin a reasonably simple task such as paining your home without preparing first, so why would you attempt one of your most difficult challenges without preparation? Throw away any lighters, ashtrays and remove the smell of cigarettes from your car, clothes and home. The night before your quit date be sure to throw away any remaining cigarettes before bed. If they’re there you will smoke them in the morning and there goes your plans to keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking.

 

Mistake #5 – Not seeking a suitable replacement.

Smoking has consumed so much of your time for so long and if you think you’re going to just  stop without finding a filler, think again. If you do not find a hobby or another way to consume your time you will spend all of that free time thinking about and missing smoking. To keep your new year’s resolution to quit smoking, take up running, walking or scrapbooking. Start that long list of projects around the house you’ve been meaning to get to. You will be amazed by how much you get done in so little time now that you’re not stopping for smoke breaks.
